EMPLOYERS MUST TRANSITION TO NEW EMPLOYMENT ELIGIBILITY VERIFICATION FORM
The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services section of the Department of Homeland Security has introduced a revised Employment Eligibility Verification Form (Form I-9), which employers must begin using no later than December 26, 2007.
All employers are responsible for completion and retention of a Form I-9 for each individual they hire for employment in the United States. This includes both citizens and non-citizens. Employers must verify employment eligibility and record the identification documents presented by the employee being hired on the Form I-9. The Form I-9 must be retained by the employer for three years after the date of hire or for one year after employment is terminated, whichever is later. The Form I-9 must also be available for inspection by authorized United States government officials. A copy of the new form and associated handbook are available in the December issue of TXANS News.
