TXANS PRESENTS ECONOMIC BENEFITS OF NONSUBSCRIPTION AT LEGISLATIVE HEARING

TXANS Presents Economic Benefits of Nonsubscription at Legislative Hearing

TXANS' Executive Director, Steve Bent was invited to provide input regarding nonsubscription, specifically how nonsubscription contributes to our state's economy and whether or not the nonsubscriber option is beneficial to our state.

Mr. Bent's testimony included actual examples from TXANS' employer members regarding ways nonsubscription has benefited their Texas operations including the promotion of growth, providing new jobs, relocating out-of-state operations to Texas and much more. One TXANS' member described how it was forced to move one segment of its operation from California because of the high cost of workers' compensation. After researching five states, Canada and Mexico the company elected to expand in Dallas-based operations because of the success the company had realized as a Texas nonsubscriber. This is just one of the many examples of Texas nonsubscribers expanding to provide new jobs and support the Texas economy because of their ability to nonsubscribe.

Mr. Bent also discussed the primary components of the average responsible nonsubscriber program as well as statistics regarding the successes nonsubscribers recognize through increased emphasis on workplace safety, accident prevention, training and safer work habits.

The House Committee on Economic Development is one of several legislative committees that will offer recommendations on workers' compensation to the full legislative body in preparation for the 79th Legislature.
